MYCELIA: ABOUT NETWORKING AS A WOMAN ARTIST

  • PLATFORM Kistlerhofstraße 70 München, BY Germany (map)

About

The exhibition Mycelia is based on the principles of Emergent Strategy (Adrienne Maree Brown) using the Fungus Mycelium as a thought model. The mycelium is the part of the fungus that grows underground in thread-like formations. It connects roots to one another and breaks down plant material to create a healthier ecosystem. In this network the mycelium also provides a healthy ecosystem for outside organisms. The mycelium is the largest organism on earth and represents the principles of ecosystem, interconnectedness, detoxification which are the focal points of the exhibition.

Based on these thoughts ten artists from Munich and Riga explore the layers of artistic success as a woman artist in this neoliberal society. Our society praises the belief in meritocracy, success as the fruit of hard labor, but if we look closer into the systemic conditions, success is highly shaped through race, class and gender. Artistic success depends on a healthy network. But what does this network look like in a society that puts competition over solidarity? What does artistic success require? What does a healthy artistic ecosystem need?

Now that COVID-19 has been revealing so many systemic injustices the exhibition seems to be even more urgent, as we need to redefine the metrics of artistic success and re-imagine better systems for a more equitable art world.

Update COVID-19

Due to the safety restriction in place for COVID-19 the exhibition format was adjusted and the physical exhibition is accompanied by a digital program with online panels, artist conversations and an exhibition guided tour.
